Thanks in large part to #BookTok, romantasy has exploded over the past few years, transforming once-niche fantasy romances into bestselling sensations. Books like Fourth Wing, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Powerless have built massive fan communities, dominated bestseller lists, and proven that readers are hungry for stories that blend magic, adventure, and romance.
As someone whose personal “holy trinity” of genres includes romance, thrillers, and fantasy, I’ve spent way too much time thinking about which books Hollywood should adapt next.
Here are ten romantasy books I’d love to see turned into movies.
1. Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
If you’ve somehow missed the Letters of Enchantment series, imagine a fantasy world at war where two rival journalists unknowingly exchange letters through enchanted typewriters.
The story combines romance, fantasy, and emotional character development in a way that feels tailor-made for the big screen.
Between the magical correspondence, wartime setting, and heartbreaking romance, Divine Rivals has all the ingredients for a beautiful fantasy film.
2. One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
Dark, atmospheric, and completely unique, One Dark Window follows Elspeth Spindle, a young woman who shares her mind with a dangerous magical entity known as the Nightmare.
The gothic forests, eerie magic system, and haunting romance would create incredible visuals on screen.
If you loved the darker tone of The Witcher or House of the Dragon, this one could be a perfect fit.
3. The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
Vampires.
Need I say more?
This romantasy follows Oraya, the adopted human daughter of a vampire king, as she competes in a deadly tournament for survival.
The combination of action, romance, political intrigue, and high-stakes competition feels like a natural blockbuster waiting to happen.
4. Powerless by Lauren Roberts
With its enemies-to-lovers romance, dangerous trials, and forbidden attraction, Powerless has become one of BookTok’s biggest recent successes.
The story follows an ordinary girl forced to survive in a kingdom where magical powers determine social status.
The world-building, tension, and cinematic action sequences would translate beautifully to film.
5. Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
Because not every fantasy adaptation needs to be dark and serious.
Assistant to the Villain offers a refreshing blend of fantasy, workplace comedy, and romance.
Think The Office meets fantasy.
The humor alone would make this one stand out from other adaptations currently in development.
6. The Shepherd King Series by Rachel Gillig
Yes, I know I already mentioned One Dark Window.
No, I don’t care.
The entire duology deserves adaptation.
The world, characters, and magic system are so visually distinctive that I would happily watch multiple films set in this universe.
7. Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent
This series deserves far more attention than it gets.
The story follows Tisaanah, a former slave determined to gain magical power and freedom.
The emotional stakes, slow-burn romance, and epic fantasy setting would create a fantastic adaptation for viewers who enjoy character-driven fantasy stories.
8. Belladonna by Adalyn Grace
A gothic mystery where Death himself becomes a love interest?
Sign me up.
The atmosphere alone would make Belladonna stand out from other fantasy adaptations. Combined with the mystery elements and unique romance, it feels like exactly the kind of story streaming services are looking for.
9. The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni
Part fantasy, part survival story, and part romance, The Prison Healer follows Kiva Meridan as she struggles to survive inside a brutal prison.
The story is packed with twists, emotional moments, and revelations that would keep audiences hooked.
10. Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole
If there’s one romantasy series I’m surprised hasn’t already been announced for adaptation, it’s Spark of the Everflame.
The series combines powerful magic, political conflict, slow-burn romance, and compelling character growth.
It feels like the kind of story that could become a multi-film franchise if handled correctly.
Which Romantasy Book Should Hollywood Adapt Next?
The good news for fantasy fans is that studios are finally paying attention to romantasy.
The bad news is that there are far more incredible books than there are adaptation slots.
If I had to pick just one, I’d probably choose The Serpent and the Wings of Night. The combination of vampires, romance, action, and tournament-style competition feels like a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
But honestly? I’d watch all ten.
