Romantasy fans, it’s officially happening 🙌
Prime Video has greenlit a television adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling novel Fourth Wing, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been refreshing the internet every few weeks hoping for new updates.
While we’re still waiting on casting announcements and an official release date, we do know quite a bit about the series already.
Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Fourth Wing TV adaptation.
Prime Video Has Officially Greenlit the Series
Amazon MGM Studios has officially acquired the rights to Rebecca Yarros’ wildly successful Empyrean series and is developing Fourth Wing as a television series in partnership with Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society.
Rather than adapting only the first novel, the studio reportedly secured the rights to all five planned books in the series, suggesting they’re thinking long-term.
If all goes according to plan, the adaptation could become one of Prime Video’s biggest fantasy franchises.
The Show Is Already in Pre-Production
The project has officially entered pre-production.
This stage focuses on preparing everything before cameras begin rolling, including finalizing scripts, scouting locations, designing costumes, building sets, and assembling the cast and production crew.
While filming hasn’t started yet, the series is actively moving forward behind the scenes.
Meredith Averill Will Serve as Showrunner
One of the announcements that made me the most excited was learning who will be leading the adaptation.
Meredith Averill has signed on as showrunner. Fantasy fans may recognize her work from Locke & Key, while many television fans will know her as an executive producer on Wednesday Season 2.
Having someone experienced with fantasy storytelling gives me a lot of confidence that the world of Basgiath will receive the attention it deserves.
Lisa Joy Will Direct the Pilot
Prime Video has also tapped Lisa Joy to direct the pilot episode.
Joy is best known as the co-creator of HBO’s Westworld, one of television’s most visually ambitious science fiction series.
If she brings that same cinematic style to Fourth Wing, we’re in for something special.
Rebecca Yarros Is Helping Bring Her Story to the Screen
One of the most reassuring pieces of news is that Rebecca Yarros isn’t stepping away from the adaptation.
Instead, she’s serving as an executive producer alongside Michael B. Jordan and the rest of the creative team.
Whenever an author is actively involved in an adaptation, I always feel a little more optimistic. While it doesn’t guarantee every scene will match the book, it does increase the chances that the heart of the story stays intact.
Michael B. Jordan Is Executive Producing
Michael B. Jordan isn’t just attached to the project in name.
His production company, Outlier Society, is producing the series, with Jordan serving as one of its executive producers.
Over the past several years, Outlier Society has built a reputation for developing ambitious projects, making this partnership feel like a great fit for a fantasy series on the scale of Fourth Wing.
Will Each Book Become Its Own Season?
While Prime Video hasn’t officially confirmed the episode count or long-term release plan, multiple entertainment outlets report that the goal is to adapt the entire Empyrean series.
That means:
- Season 1 → Fourth Wing
- Season 2 → Iron Flame
- Season 3 → Onyx Storm
- Future seasons could continue adapting the remaining books as they’re released.
Fantasy novels this large and detailed simply need more time than a two-hour movie could ever provide. Instead of squeezing hundreds (or even thousands) of pages into a single film, a television series gives the story room to breathe, allowing more character development, world-building, and faithful adaptations of the source material.
We’re already seeing this approach with other major fantasy franchises—including HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, which will dedicate an entire season to each book.
What Is Fourth Wing About?
If you haven’t read Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling novel yet, Fourth Wing follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail.
Expected to spend her life as a quiet scribe, Violet’s plans are shattered when her mother—one of Navarre’s most powerful generals—orders her to enter Basgiath War College and compete to become a dragon rider.
The problem?
Dragon riders don’t tolerate weakness.
And dragons definitely don’t.
Between deadly training, political intrigue, unforgettable romance, and some of my favorite dragons in fantasy, it’s easy to see why Fourth Wing became such a massive BookTok phenomenon.
When Will the Series Be Released?
Unfortunately, Prime Video hasn’t announced an official release date.
With the series currently in pre-production and casting still underway, most industry estimates point toward a premiere sometime in 2027, although 2028 remains a possibility depending on the production schedule.
As soon as Amazon announces more details, I’ll update this article.
My Biggest Hope for the Adaptation
As excited as I am to finally see Basgiath come to life, I hope the series takes its time.
One of the biggest strengths of Fourth Wing is the relationships—especially Violet’s growth, the friendships she forms, and the tension that builds throughout the story.
Those quieter moments are just as important as the dragons and battle scenes.
If Prime Video can balance both, I genuinely think this has the potential to become the next fantasy phenomenon.

Final Thoughts
It’s still early days for the Fourth Wing adaptation, but everything we’ve learned so far makes me optimistic.
An experienced creative team, Rebecca Yarros’ involvement, Michael B. Jordan’s production company, and Prime Video’s commitment to adapting the series all point toward a project with enormous potential.
Now all we need is the cast announcement…
…and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever been more impatient.
